Glocal Life Hakodate | Private Hakodate Tours | Personalised Guided Experiences in the Heart of Hokkaido

Turning Everyday Hakodate into Lifelong Memories

Discover your own Hakodate story with local guide, Josh.

Expertly designed private tours for international travellers.

Hakodate is a city best felt, not just seen. Beyond the famous vistas lie the echoes of history, the enticing aromas of hidden backstreets, and the authentic pulse of local life.

I invite you to step away from the guidebook and experience a truly "living" Hakodate. Whether we are exploring the city’s profound history or its contemporary local culture, I provide a seamless bridge between the Hakodate I call home and the world you have travelled from.

Meet Your Guide: Why I Walk These Streets

Hakodate Born, Global Mind
"Bridging Hakodate’s heritage with a global perspective."

 Hello, I am Josh.

I was born and raised amongst the harbour breezes and sloping streets of Hakodate. My journey as a guide began with a simple realisation: it was only by living abroad that I truly recognised the extraordinary charm of my hometown.

My Journey: A Foundation of Hospitality and Connection

  • New Zealand Cultural Immersion (1 Year): Living abroad allowed me to experience the world’s diversity first-hand, building a foundation of deep cross-cultural respect and communication.
  • Advanced English & Professional Communication: I dedicated my college studies to mastering the nuances of the English language to ensure I can share Japan's stories with precision and heart.
  • Hospitality Professional: My years in the hotel industry taught me the true meaning of Omotenashi—the art of anticipating a guest’s needs before they are even spoken.
  • Global Insight via New Zealand (1 Year): Through my experience in hospitality and international student organisations in NZ, I learned exactly what global travellers look for when seeking an authentic Japanese experience.

Now based in my hometown, I operate as an English instructor and private guide. I look at Hakodate through a unique lens—blending local intimacy with an international mindset. My goal is to share the city's "East-meets-West" aesthetic with clarity, depth, and sincerity.

My Strengths

  • Seamless & Stress-Free Dialogue: With two years of immersion in New Zealand and a career in professional hospitality, I provide fluid, nuanced communication for a truly relaxed journey.
  • Story-Driven History: I do not simply recite dates. I bring the dramatic transition of the Samurai era to modern Japan (the Bakumatsu period) to life through engaging, human-centred storytelling.
  • A Bespoke Experience: Your time is the most valuable part of your trip. I offer a completely tailor-made approach to ensure your day in Hakodate is exactly as you imagined.

Tour Options: A Local Perspective, Tailored to You

I provide fully private tours expertly designed for English-speaking visitors.

Note for Japanese speakers: I also warmly welcome Japanese-speaking guests interested in seeing Hakodate through a "global lens." Please feel free to consult with me.

1. Hakodate Heritage Walking Tour

Explore the churches and iconic historic buildings of the Motomachi district. We will uncover the origins of the city and discover why this port town remains a cultural jewel of Japan.

2. Local Flavours & Market Experience

Go beyond the tourist hubs to the markets and backstreet gems loved by the people who live here. Experience Hakodate’s daily life through its seasonal delicacies and vibrant food culture.

3. Fully Bespoke Itineraries

From specific photography spots to following the footsteps of historical figures, I will design a unique itinerary from scratch based on your personal interests.

Visualising Your Day: Sample Itineraries

The following are examples of how your day might flow. Every tour is adjusted to your pace and interests.

The Half-Day Stroll (4 Hours)

  • 10:00 | Hotel Pick-up: We begin with a brief consultation to refine the day’s route.

  • 11:45 | Hidden Backstreets: Discovering the local artisans and quiet residential charm.
  • 13:30 | Tea/Coffee Break: Reflections in a historic setting before finishing at your hotel or preferred drop-off point.

The Full-Day Immersion (7 Hours)

  • 11:00 | Goryokaku Fortress: Unravelling the history of the star-shaped fort and the Last Samurai.
  • 13:00 | Curated Lunch: A hand-picked local eatery based on your preferences.
  • 14:30 | Harbour & Heritage Deep Dive: A slow exploration of Motomachi’s architecture and maritime history.
  • 16:00 | Seasonal Highlight: A sunset view or boutique local crafts before returning to your hotel.

Is This Experience Right for You?

Our tours are crafted for travellers who value narrative over numbers and immersion over speed. If you seek to uncover the layers of Hakodate through authentic flavours, rich history, and genuine human connection, we are a natural match.

  • Ideal for: Those who desire a bespoke, unhurried journey. Each experience begins with a carefully curated core itinerary, which then serves as a flexible canvas for your personal interests—allowing us to add optional elements or adjust the pace as your curiosity evolves.
  • Our style may not suit: Travellers seeking a rapid, "tick-box" sightseeing schedule or the rigid structure of a large-group coach tour. We prioritise the luxury of time and the depth of an individualised connection.

How to Start Your Journey

Even if your travel dates are not yet finalised, I encourage you to reach out.

I use a "dialogue-first" enquiry process via Google Forms. This allows us to discuss your specific interests and fine-tune the details before any formal commitment, ensuring a perfectly matched experience on the day.

  1. Enquiry: Share your preferred dates and interests via the form below.
  2. Custom Proposal: I will reply within 24 hours with a suggested itinerary.
  3. Confirmation: Once you are delighted with the plan, we finalise the booking.
  4. Tour Day: We meet at your hotel, the station, or a designated landmark to begin your adventure.

Why a Google Form?

Because you are not just a booking number. A form allows me to hear your specific needs—from dietary requirements to walking pace—so we can build your perfect day together.

It would be my greatest honour if, through our time together, this city becomes a place you hold dear.

About Joshua Matsumoto: Your Local Guide in Hakodate

Introduction

A Hakodate-born guide helping visitors connect through language and local insight.

Hello, I am Joshua Matsumoto (Josh), the founder of Glocal Life Hakodate. Born in Hakodate and raised in the neighbouring town of Nanae, I have spent my career exploring the intersections of language, hospitality, and my local heritage.

Through my work as a private guide and English instructor, I aim to provide more than just a tour; I strive to create meaningful connections through authentic communication.

Background: My Journey with Language and Hospitality

My journey to becoming a guide has been shaped by years of hands-on experience and a deep curiosity about the world.

The Foundations in New Zealand (Aged 18)

My journey began with a nine-month language study in New Zealand. I spent the first three months living with a host family and the following six months in a flat, learning to navigate daily life independently. My evenings were spent "self-correcting" the conversations I had during the day, constantly simulating dialogues on the bus to find the most natural ways to connect with people.

Academic and Professional Training

After returning to Japan, I majored in English at a vocational college in Sapporo. Here, I refined my self-taught skills by studying grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation systematically under both Japanese and native instructors. This was followed by a three-week training programme in Canada.

Experience in the Hospitality Industry

I spent several years working in the accommodation and retail sectors of hotels within Hokkaido. Working at the "front line" of guest services, I mastered the practicalities of Japanese hospitality (omotenashi) and the importance of anticipating a guest's needs.

A Second Chapter in New Zealand (2017)

In 2017, I returned to New Zealand on a Working Holiday visa. To challenge myself, I handled everything—from the visa application to finding employment—entirely on my own without an agent. This year of living and working independently in a foreign culture remains a cornerstone of my professional perspective.

New Zealand Memories

Why I Started Glocal Life Hakodate

Founded in 2019 to foster "Glocal" lifestyles in Southern Hokkaido.

I founded Glocal Life Hakodate to encourage the "Think Globally, Act Locally" mindset. By experiencing other cultures, we learn to see our own hometown’s strengths and weaknesses more clearly. My goal is to use my language skills and local knowledge to ensure that visitors feel truly welcomed and understood in our region.

Guiding & Teaching Philosophy

Prioritising the "joy of connection" over textbook perfection.

Continuous Learning

Since late 2025, I have been studying for the National Government Licensed Guide-Interpreter certification. I believe that to be a great guide, one must never stop learning. I am constantly updating my knowledge of Japanese geography and history to share even deeper insights with my guests.

The Heart of Conversation

In my view, the essence of communication isn't about perfect grammar—it’s about the "catchball" of conversation. Even when words are hard to find, I believe in using every tool available to draw a reaction and build an understanding. This "joy of being understood" is exactly what I want to share, whether I am guiding a guest through the streets of Hakodate or teaching a student in my classroom.

Message to Visitors

Hakodate is a city with a unique international history and a warm, welcoming spirit. I would be honoured to help you discover its hidden gems, from its historic architecture to its world-class local produce. I look forward to meeting you and sharing the stories of my home.
